I am so grateful to have found Ramit Sethi and his website I will teach you to be rich and I even bought his book! It's funny, because I was prepared to listen to his seminar on " 7 Biggest Mistakes Keeping You From Your Dream Job" at 9PM ( I attach the link to it in the bottom), but after running home, I realized it was over! I didn't realized it started at 9PM Eastern time....instead of Pacific.
If you are out looking for a job, submitting tons and tons of resumes onto Monster, Career Builder, Craigslist, etc...just as I used to in the past and has yet to hear back from them, the 7 "audio" videos may help you a lot. I used to assumed that if my resume was good enough, if I had the experience and the work ethic, if I was willing to work harder than the next candidate, the hiring managers would see that and offer me an interview. I was so wrong....My resume and cover letters were boring, they did not distinct me from other candidates at all. My experiences may have been unique and my personality may have been different, but I did not demonstrate them well through those 2 tools.
All I thought about was what I want to get out of the position, but instead, Ramit tells us to think in terms of what WE CAN DO FOR THE COMPANY. Do you know their problems? Can you offer solutions? What can you bring to the table?! Did you do your research?
Out of hundreds of resumes that were sent, I heard back from 3 or 4 jobs I had applied to?
It was frustrating and disappointing, but I now know why (thanks to the video and well....experience). I was doing the same thing that every other typical job seeker was doing. Uploading/sending out resumes and EXPECTING TO BE CALLED BACK... Just sat and waited.... They have only 10 seconds to scan our resumes because they have hundreds of others to look at. I'm sure that's what 90% of job seekers are doing, including myself.
Invite decision makers/people who work at the company (or used to)/etc...out for coffee! Get their advice to learn about the company you are applying for!
I honestly wish that college offered classes on how to look for a real job. Techniques, tips, and strategies to differentiate yourself as a candidate, to actually talk to the decision makers, the HR managers, etc... My resume was horrible because it seemed so generic and it just did not represent what I wanted to. If only instead of resumes, they would put us into real situations to see how we solve problems and lead teams...

- "I don't need a dream job"
- I am not qualified ****
- I've already taken a lot of personality tests...
- I can figure this out on my own ***
- I don't want to close any doors
- I just need to update my resume ***
- I want to do this... I want to do that... I think this...
Guilty!
I really encourage you, or anyone in your family, or friends that are looking for jobs, even if they are not, these strategies/tips/and things to think about are really worth your time. (You click on the link above and you can enter your email & name, you will receive weekly email/blog posts that will be very useful) Just because you have a college degree, it does not guarantee a job nor does it mean you know how to look for a job. Don't look for jobs the same way that everyone else is doing it...because I used to be one of them and it was too frustrating. Wish I had used some of these strategies earlier on, but it's never too late. Most importantly (what I do all the time), don't disqualify yourself for the position, let them do it for you.
